The Washington Times: Go Against the Trends at Adams Morgan Day

Speaking of trends, just like everyone goes to New York Fashion Week these days, everyone goes to the 14th Street/U Street Corridor these days, too. It wasn’t too long ago that the Local 16 rooftop seemed like an adventurous outing and my suburbanite friends would question my suggestion to go dancing in the basement of Saint-Ex. Now, long-time neighborhood residents sympathize with the Manhattanites whose favorite spots get overrun with a “bridge-and-tunnel” crowd. Why, pray tell, did you take a 36-minute Metro ride (with a line change) to go to a dive bar?

Because I refuse to wait in line for steak frites at Le Diplomate–I mean, can they even compare to the steak frites at Bistrot du Coin?–I’ve rediscovered Adams Morgan. For a long time, I would avoid the neighborhood with its drunk college kids and jumbo slices of pizza. Increasingly, however, as the prepsters and bros have infiltrated Dupont and Logan Circles, Adams Morgan’s authenticity seems more desirable on a weekend night. From the clean, well-prepared, farm-to-table food at Cashion’s Eat Place, to the best Mexican fare this side of the (D.C.) border at Mixtec, I’m never disappointed in the variety of culinary options along 18th and Columbia NW. Surprisingly, you can also find a tiki cocktail that even Hemingway would enjoy at Jack Rose’s hidden back bar. Thus, I’d highly encourage you to go against the trends, and check out Adams Morgan Day on Sunday.

Or, you could wait in line for another vodka soda on a celebrity chef’s generic rooftop. Your choice.
