I’ve been methodically downsizing my wardrobe—minimalism feels much more fresh than a closet full of trends, and honestly, with my travel schedule and love of sleep, I’m usually too lazy to wear anything other than black skinny jeans and an Equipment blouse. But I’m still drawn to unique, vibrant, “look at me” prints along the lines of Mary Katrantzou and Clover Canyon—and while I’m thinking about Hong Kong, I’m reminded of one designer from there, Mountain Yam, whose kaleidoscopic prints would make a welcome addition to my increasingly achromatic wardrobe.

During Taipei IN Style in October, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) hosted a runway show featuring the spring collections of five of Hong Kong’s most promising designers. I was impressed by the quality and craftsmanship at Hong Kong Fashion Week a few years ago, and the Hong Kong designers in Taipei were equally polished.

Mountain Yam’s candy colors and sharp tailoring stood out. A graduate of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Fashion Institute of Technology, Mr. Yam owns an eponymous couture line as well as 112 mountainyam, his ready-to-wear label that was a big hit among international fashionistas in Taiwan. The printed separates—like a shorts suit and a crop top paired with cropped pants—were on point for this season, and totally unique while still being totally wearable. With such an over-saturated ready-to-wear market, it could take some time for Mountain Yam to make waves in the United States—but I won’t be surprised when he does.

This owner of 6+ pairs of black jeans would also like to mention Chow Tan Tan, whose models clad in dark, sleek silhouettes with leather accents exemplified the mystery and style of Hong Kong.
